Celebrating Nelson Algren’s Legacy: A Chicago Tavern Tour

Nelson Algren, a renowned writer, was known for his fondness for Chicago taverns rather than a passion for drinking. Though he enjoyed spending time in these locales, he wasn’t identified with the excessive drinking habits often linked to writers of his era. His affection lay with the people and culture of saloons, where neighborhoods found solace and camaraderie.

Despite his departure from Chicago in 1975 and his passing in 1981, Algren’s presence persists through his writings, adaptations, and dedicated events. Journalist Mary Wisniewski, author of the biography Algren: A Life, notes that Algren’s immersion in bars stemmed more from a desire for company than alcohol dependence. Bars offered a lively atmosphere that contrasted with his solitary struggles at the typewriter.

To honor the 75th anniversary of Algren’s acclaimed work Chicago: City on the Make, Bill Savage and Paul Durica, experts in Algren’s oeuvre, have organized a three-day tour across his cherished Chicago spots. On September 3, these enthusiasts will guide attendees through places imbued with Algren’s spirit.

The event begins at 7 p.m. Friday at Bernice’s Tavern, a historic venue on 3238 S. Halsted Street, celebrating the cultural significance Algren placed on taverns in local communities. At 1 p.m. Saturday, the tour moves to the Old Town Ale House, a quintessential Chicago bar lauded by Roger Ebert as the best in the world. Here, Algren’s portrait adds to the vibrant ambiance.

The final stop is at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Hideout, featuring various readings and performances, including works by Lester Munson, Liz Garibay, and others. Tickets range from $5 to $20 with a cash bar available. Participants will also witness art inspired by Algren, including a poster by Ethan D’Ercole.

The tour extends beyond Chicago; some attendees plan to visit the Nelson Algren Museum of Miller Beach in Indiana. They intend to celebrate an annotated edition of City, co-edited by Savage. Meanwhile, local brewery Hop Butcher for the World will offer Algren-inspired beers to enrich the festivities.
