Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Closure and Renovation Challenges

Visitors to the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on Monday found the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool partially drained and areas taped off, obstructing one of the capital’s renowned views. This closure is part of an ongoing renovation project mired in controversy, maintenance issues, and varied opinions about the pool’s damage.

The recent work was intended to prepare the pool for Fourth of July celebrations marking the United States’ 250th anniversary. Officials noted that draining the pool allows crews to clear debris from Independence Day fireworks, assess liner damage, and deal with maintenance problems.

The controversy includes claims that vandals damaged the newly installed liner, which former President Donald Trump referred to as bearing a 350-foot ‘gash.’ Authorities have arrested several individuals for alleged damage, though at least one person denies the accusations.

This disagreement is central to broader discussions over the costly refurbishment, which features a dark blue coating on the historic pool’s base.

The disruption occurs during the peak tourist season in Washington. The Lincoln Memorial, one of the most visited sites on the National Mall, attracted about 8.5 million visitors in 2024. The city welcomed over 27 million tourists last year. Hence, closures of major sites are noticeable, given the influx of summer tourists hoping to see Washington’s iconic landmarks.

Several visitors expressed disappointment about the pool’s closure. A man who traveled from Reno, Nevada, found his experience diminished. He lamented to Newsweek, “I used to live here, and it was pleasant to walk along the path. Now, it feels ruined.”

Landon Miller, also from Reno, Nevada, was visiting the capital for the first time. He commented on the irony and disappointment of the situation. “If this doesn’t represent the current state of politics, nothing else does,” Miller told Newsweek.

A visitor from Charleston, South Carolina, wanted to show his children the Reflecting Pool. He shared, “I’m disappointed my kids can’t enjoy it in all its glory, but sometimes these things happen.”

Local resident Paul Zeisset mentioned, “It’s unfortunate that it’s fenced off. The renovation project seems to have achieved little; it doesn’t feel right to have it off-limits.”

Since its renovation, the pool has encountered several issues. Algae growth and peeling coating sections appeared soon after the pool’s June refilling. On June 9, damage to the liner was reported, which the Trump administration attributes to vandalism. Critics, however, question whether renovation problems may also contribute.
