Historic Los Angeles Building Transformed into Boutique Hotel

An iconic building in Los Angeles, dating back to 1931, has been reborn as Hotel Lucile following extensive restoration work. Originally the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Silver Lake, this structure now serves as a 25-room boutique hotel with a courtyard cocktail pool. The transition was completed in September, after seven and a half years of dedicated effort.

The building’s rich history includes roles as a church, theater, and antique market before its current incarnation as a hotel. Anthony Gutierrez, the opening general manager, explained the meticulous restoration efforts aimed at maintaining original elements while accommodating modern functions.

“Literally just about every aspect of the chapel itself was preserved,” Gutierrez stated, highlighting features like wood flooring, beams, and stained-glass windows.

Original features such as stained-glass windows, wooden beams, and high ceilings grace the property. Modern necessities required challenging updates, including new electrical and plumbing systems, while preserving the building’s heritage. Nearly 90% of the dining area retains its original structure.

Unexpected challenges arose during the redevelopment. “We had surprises up until the day when we received our certificate of occupancy,” Gutierrez acknowledged, noting the intricate balance between preservation and modernization.

Hotel Lucile’s contemporary amenities include an Erewhon-curated minibar and a nightly roving martini cart, blending tradition with innovation. Artwork, including murals and pieces for sale, adorns the property, adding aesthetic value.

Gutierrez suggests that the unique combination of old and new offers guests a departure from traditional hotel experiences. “There is some comfort in things being the same, but taking even a small risk of just going somewhere different can really bring kind of a highlight to a trip or even a staycation,” he remarked.
