Engelbert Humperdinck Reflects on Life-Changing Moment in Army

British singer Engelbert Humperdinck recently shared a striking memory from his time in the British Army. During an episode of “The Engelbert Humperdinck Show,” the 90-year-old artist recounted how a simple undone shoelace played a crucial role in saving his life.

Humperdinck joined the army in 1954 at the age of 18. He hoped to be assigned to Cyprus, where a friend of his was already stationed. However, his destiny took him to Germany. The singer explained the selection process, “During training, you form ranks of three, and the adjutant counts out 24 people. They assign destinations: Cyprus, Germany, Belgium, or wherever.”

Humperdinck vividly remembered the moment when assignments were being decided. “All of a sudden, I looked down and noticed my bootlace was undone,” he said. As he paused to tie it, his peers began forming ranks. He quickly went to the front line, just as the destinations were called out: “Malaya, Cyprus, and the next one, Germany. I went to Germany, missing Cyprus by one.”

The singer expressed gratitude, believing a higher power was watching over him. “Later on, I found out that everyone headed to Cyprus was killed in an ambush en route to Nicosia,” he reflected.

Humperdinck spent an “interesting couple of years” in Mulheim, Germany. This twist of fate, marked by a shoelace, changed his course during his military service.

The British artist, born Arnold George Dorsey, achieved fame in the music industry in 1967. His song “Release Me” reached No. 1 in the UK, marking a major breakthrough. Humperdinck’s career boasts over 140 million records sold worldwide, four Grammy nominations, a Golden Globe, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The singer reflected on his long-lasting success during a 2017 interview with Billboard. “I was just happy to have success at that time,” he said. “It was always a question in my head about how long it was going to last.” Humperdinck emphasized the importance of enduring music, which has served as his “passport to the world.”
