Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed faced online criticism for his comments during a town hall meeting at Western Michigan University. He described pregnant women as ‘an adult’ or ‘juvenile human’ when responding to a pro-life student’s question. El-Sayed supports codifying Roe v. Wade into law and funding Planned Parenthood, and he addressed the student by saying, ‘I respect your position because you aim to protect and empower life. The question is, what’s the best way to achieve that? And whose life is affected in the process?’
El-Sayed argued that when the government limits reproductive care, it reduces a person’s role to a ‘carrying vehicle for a fetus that has not breathed air.’ Critics on social media were quick to denounce these remarks as dehumanizing, targeting the vocabulary used. One Twitter post, managed by RNC Research, stated, ‘Abdul El-Sayed refuses to use the word woman in the context of pregnancy.’
Rich Sementa from the Mark Levin Show posted, ‘Abdul El-Sayed says restrictions turn an ‘adult or juvenile human’ into ‘simply a carrying vehicle.’ He won’t say WOMAN.’
Others, such as National Review’s Rich Lowry, criticized El-Sayed for not directly addressing women’s abortion rights. Tom Elliott of Grabien Media commented, ‘Nobody talks like that in real life.’

Former Michigan Rep. Mike Rogers, the Republican Senate nominee, is running against El-Sayed for the seat being vacated by retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters. Amy Curtis, a Townhall writer, expressed disbelief at El-Sayed’s remarks. In a statement, former GOP gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon accused El-Sayed of aiming to change perceptions about motherhood and family.
Amidst the November race that may determine Senate control, El-Sayed’s stance on abortion, LGBTQ+ rights, and gender-affirming care for minors is under scrutiny. Despite rejecting the socialist label, he identifies as a capitalist. Fox News Digital contacted El-Sayed’s campaign for further comment.
