Texas Man Charged with Capital Murder in Shooting of 5-Year-Old

Authorities have arrested and charged a Texas man with capital murder following a roadway shooting that resulted in the death of a 5-year-old girl. Jeremy Porter, aged 47, is currently in custody at the Harris County Jail in Houston. Investigators confirmed him as the suspect in the fatal shooting of Zah’Layah Walter, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.

The investigation utilized evidence like data from automated license plate readers, leading to Porter’s arrest in under 24 hours after the incident. The tragic event occurred Saturday night in northwest Harris County. Zah’Layah was riding in a vehicle with her mother, Monica Hicks, and her siblings when the family was attacked, as reported by the sheriff’s office.

Authorities said the family’s vehicle was hit by gunfire, tragically killing the young girl. Monica Hicks shared with KHOU that she was returning home from her mother’s house with her children when the shooting began on Grant Road near Jones Road. She recounted, “All my kids in the back seat were screaming, and they continued to shoot in my car. And I did not know my daughter was hit until I pulled into my apartment.”

The investigation is ongoing, as stated by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. They emphasized their commitment to seeking justice for Zah’Layah and supporting her grieving family.
