Rupert Everett has opened up about the physical tolls of trying to maintain the ideal physique in Hollywood. The renowned actor, known for his roles in movies like “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” is now facing lasting health issues from years of striving for the perfect leading-man look.
Everett, 67, detailed how years of intense weightlifting during the 1980s and 1990s have left him with significant health problems. He shared his experiences in a recent interview, explaining how neglecting important training practices caused long-term damage.
I ruined myself. Now I’m almost crippled as a result,” Everett told The Guardian.
He noted that he skipped essential components of fitness like stretching, which could have protected his body from injury.
I could never be bothered to do all those things, like stretching, which were necessary for lifting weights, because your tendons get tighter and tighter,” he stated.
Before turning to weights, Everett resorted to other methods to enhance his appearance. He admitted to wearing specially designed bodysuits that made him appear more muscular and larger on film sets.
I met these two queens in Tufnell Park [north London] who made bodysuits, and they made me a false bottom, false calves, false shoulders, false everything,” he revealed.
Everett expressed that these enhancements helped him match the industry standards of physical appearance at the time. He managed to keep his use of bodysuits a secret from film directors, attending costume fittings while wearing them.
Throughout his career, Everett has gained acclaim for his performances across film, television, and theater. His career includes notable roles in “An Ideal Husband” and “The Madness of King George.”
