Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr., a former MVP, sustained an injury during Tuesday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds. The incident occurred in the third inning when Acuna fouled a ball off his left leg, leading to an immediate collapse and subsequent crawling towards the grass along the first base line. He engaged in communication with the team’s trainer and manager Walt Weiss for over a minute before eventually standing and walking off the field independently.

Outfielder Brewer Hicklen was substituted in place of Acuna following the injury.

This injury comes at a critical juncture for the Braves as they are striving for a first-round bye in the postseason. Should Acuna remain sidelined for an extended period, the team may need to face the Wild Card round without their standout player.

His current OPS of .814 doesn’t quite match his .934 from last year, yet he has had a commendable season following a sluggish March and April. His OPS was .724 through April, leading to an IL stint due to a hamstring strain in early May. Upon his return, Acuna showed a strong performance with a 1.056 OPS in May, though he struggled over the following months, batting below league-average in June, July, and August.

In September, he rediscovered his form, hitting seven home runs, driving in 19 runs, and posting a 1.087 OPS.

The Braves are in urgent need of Acuna’s contributions for the postseason and are optimistic that his injury is minor as they prepare for a Wild Card series against one of three highly skilled teams.
