Mayor Zohran Mamdani and President Trump convened in New York City for a notable meeting on Monday. This occasion marked their third meeting but the first at Gracie Mansion. Previously, Mayor Mamdani met President Trump at the White House shortly after his election and again in February.
During the February meeting, Mamdani proposed a massive housing project in Queens, requiring billions in federal support. A mock-up of a newspaper headline, “Trump To City: Let’s Build,” was unveiled. In the latest meeting, affordable housing was discussed, though details remained sparse. The leaders emphasized continuing dialogues on enhancing the lives of New Yorkers.
Standing together at a subsequent news conference, Mamdani updated on his housing proposal involving the construction of the largest rail deck worldwide at Sunnyside Yard, Queens. This ambitious project would create 12,000 housing units. The proposal originated during former Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration.
Mamdani stated, “We spoke about Sunnyside Yards,” highlighting a commitment to further conversations at City Hall and with the White House. The mayor expressed excitement about creating 12,000 homes and 30,000 jobs.
President Trump acknowledged the project’s federal orientation, citing the need for federal approvals and funding due to the site’s advantageous location.
Carlo Scissura, part of the initial Sunnyside Yards task force, praised the collaborative nature of the mayor and president, emphasizing the site’s potential to revitalize an unused area.
However, not all support the development. City Councilwoman Julie Won, representing the district, argued that resources might better address immediate housing and healthcare crises rather than long-term construction.
The meeting coincided with the United Nations General Assembly, where President Trump was scheduled to discuss global issues, including Iran, Gaza peace plans, and complex world challenges.
Additionally, meetings with leaders from the United Kingdom, Japan, Venezuela, and Ukraine were planned, excluding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu due to a scheduling conflict. Netanyahu will arrive after President Trump’s departure from New York City.
