Kailey Skurka Nears Milestone in Varsity Volleyball Career

Senior outside hitter Kailey Skurka is on the cusp of a significant achievement as her four-year varsity volleyball career at Lake Central concludes. With seven regular-season games and at least one postseason match ahead, Skurka needs 51 kills to reach 1,000 career kills. Standing at 5-foot-11, Skurka has set this milestone as a goal since her freshman year. She said, “It would mean a lot to see all the hard work pay off.”

Skurka, who will continue her volleyball career at Seton Hill, leads her team with 195 kills, 115 digs, and 219 serve receptions this season. The Indians have an 11-6 record overall and are 7-1 in the conference. As the team prepares to play Duneland Athletic Conference leader Chesterton, Coach Naveed Nizam emphasizes Skurka’s growing legacy. “It’s a huge thing for her legacy here at Lake Central,” Nizam stated. Plans are underway to establish a ‘1,000 club’ at the school, which will honor players who achieve 1,000 assists, kills, or digs with a plaque.

“I also think she’ll be remembered as a leader and a very likable player who dominated the court,” Nizam added.

Skurka’s impact is felt beyond her statistics. Teammate Arielle Carter-Reed, who has 91 kills, 109 digs, 215 serve receptions, and a team-high 23 aces, finds motivation in Skurka’s achievements. Carter-Reed said, “It elevates my game because I want to play as good or even better than Kailey.” Having played together since they were 12, she is inspired by Skurka’s skill and leadership.

Skurka’s influence extends to her teammates’ performance this season. The team looks forward to potentially tying for first in the DAC and winning sectionals. Skurka expresses optimism about their chances, stating, “We have the team to win. It’s just a matter of what team will show up that day.”

Looking ahead to college, Skurka is eager to meet new people and compete at a higher level. She is excited about the challenge, saying, “I’m looking forward to pushing myself harder and meeting new friends.”
