Wall Street Sees Relief Amid Oil Price Drop and Resilient Stocks

57 minutes ago 0

U.S. stocks closed out their first winning week in three, following a decrease in oil prices on Friday. The S&P 500 rose by 0.5%, breaking a three-day losing streak characterized by significant volatility due to rising bond yields. Despite market fluctuations, the S&P 500 pulled back within 0.7% of its all-time high achieved last month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 478 points, or 0.9%, while the Nasdaq composite advanced by 0.5%.

The drop in oil prices provided a boost to stocks. Brent oil fell by 2.8% to $97.44 per barrel, influenced by uncertainties surrounding the war with Iran and the status of the Strait of Hormuz for oil transportation. The fluctuating oil market responds to hopes of a potential deal to reopen the Strait, while doubts cause price increases.

Trading remained unstable on Wall Street Friday, particularly following a report on U.S. consumer sentiment that affected Treasury yields. The University of Michigan’s report indicated that consumers are expecting inflation of 4.6% in the upcoming year, an increase from the previous forecast of 4%. While consumer sentiment was not as poor as anticipated, it dipped to its lowest in four months.

High inflation expectations pose challenges for the economy, as they can motivate spending behavior that exacerbates inflation. Respondents mentioned purchasing certain products now to evade anticipated price hikes, which could prompt sellers to increase prices.

The 10-year Treasury yield temporarily spiked to 5.22% from 5.18% Thursday, nearing its highest point since 2007. This yield increase impacts the economy by raising borrowing costs and reducing stock and investment prices. Since the onset of the Iran conflict, the yield has surged from 3.97%. Factors such as inflation concerns, oil prices, and governmental debt contribute to yield instability worldwide.

Oil price reductions later on Friday eased yields, bringing the 10-year yield down to 5.15%, which supported stock recovery on Wall Street. Akamai Technologies’ stock rose by 3.2% after announcing an $11.6 billion agreement with Anthropic, known for its AI chatbot, Claude. Additionally, Costco Wholesale saw a 2.9% stock increase following reports of stronger-than-anticipated quarterly profits.

Strong profit returns from U.S. companies contribute to stock market resilience amid inflation and fluctuating oil prices. The S&P 500 closed at 7,743.41 points, the Dow Jones Industrial Average at 51,828.62, and the Nasdaq composite at 27,068.72.

Globally, stock markets showed mixed results. In Asia, Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose by 1.3%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell by 1%. In Europe, market fluctuations were noted.
