Kenyan Court Halts U.S. Ebola Quarantine Unit Plan

4 weeks ago 0

A high court in Kenya has temporarily halted the establishment of an Ebola quarantine unit aimed at housing Americans in the country. This decision affects plans set by the previous U.S. administration. The facility was projected to open on Friday.

The court’s order, obtained by The New York Times, was issued after a petition challenged the constitutionality of the proposed quarantine unit. It remains unclear how long this suspension will last, as further hearings are scheduled for Tuesday.

The petitioning group, Katiba Institute, demands transparency from the Kenyan government regarding any agreements with the United States concerning the facility. Currently, the government has not confirmed any arrangement to house American citizens in Kenya.

U.S. officials had earlier announced the creation of a 50-bed quarantine unit. This facility was to be located at a military air base in Laikipia, approximately 100 miles north of Nairobi, and operational by the end of the week.

In a conversation with The New York Times, Nora Mbagathi, executive director of Katiba Institute, emphasized respect for international cooperation but insisted on adherence to constitutional procedures.

Tommy Pigott, a spokesperson for the State Department, noted U.S. commitment of $13.5 million for Ebola preparedness in Kenya. Discussions between Kenyan President William Ruto and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly covered Ebola measures, though not specifically the quarantine unit.

President Ruto also mentioned on social media his discussions on Ebola with international representatives, highlighting cooperation and dismissing isolationism, yet omitting details on the proposed quarantine center.

The plan for the American-focused quarantine unit has drawn criticism, as Kenya has no recorded Ebola cases. Davji Atellah, secretary general of the doctors’ union, condemned this facility for not addressing potential Ebola cases among Kenyans.
