Nor’easter Brings Severe Weather, Disruptions to East Coast Residents

Such scenes are unfolding for tens of millions from the mid-Atlantic to Maine with a powerful September nor’easter causing coastal flooding, heavy rain, and intense winds.

Nearly 80,000 people experienced power outages across states like New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Massachusetts as of Saturday evening, according to PowerOutage.com. The storm is expected to continue impacting areas such as the Jersey Shore, New York City, and Eastern Massachusetts through Sunday, the National Weather Service (NWS) stated.

Footage shared online captures flooded streets in New Jersey and large waves crashing ashore. In New York City, images show residents kayaking through inundated streets. Emergency declarations were made in counties across New Jersey and New York, including New York City.

Meteorologist Francis Tarasiewicz, with the NWS in Massachusetts, predicted wind gusts reaching up to 60 miles per hour along the coast. This nor’easter’s arrival before the traditional storm season, which stretches from October to May, is noteworthy for its extended duration.

‘Many nor’easters typically last about a day,’ he noted. ‘This one, however, presents a 48-hour period of winds exceeding 35 to 40 miles per hour.’

Travel disruptions are significant. More than 1,000 flights were canceled Saturday, and many others faced delays. Ferry services on Cape Cod and in Rhode Island experienced setbacks, while Amtrak canceled several routes due to the adverse conditions.

Off New York’s coast, passenger Jessica Lisboa equipped herself for a turbulent cruise with green apples, ginger ale, and an anti-nausea bracelet. ‘Was it wild? Yeah, sure,’ she recalled, likening the experience to a roller coaster. Despite the challenges, she found the journey worthwhile.

The storm forced the cancellation of numerous events. Among these, Maryland’s Oceans Calling music festival was canceled and an AC/DC concert in New Jersey postponed. The Boston Red Sox reorganized their game against the Chicago Cubs.

Some residents adapted creatively. Olga Ostrovetsky, who planned a September wedding envisioning a picturesque fall day, noted ‘It’s very, very windy.’ Her initial disappointment shifted to seeing a fitting irony considering her rainy first encounter with her fiancé.

Meanwhile, Atlantic City’s Manno decided to relocate inland overnight due to the storm. Looking ahead, she expressed uncertainty about remaining in the flood-prone area. ‘It’s crazy,’ she remarked.
