Tom Kim Faces Crucial Decision: Presidents Cup Glory or Exemption from Military Service

The International team stands a realistic chance to secure victory at the Presidents Cup for the second time in its history on Sunday. However, one of the team’s key players, Tom Kim, might miss the conclusion of this significant event.

Tom Kim has been a standout performer at Medinah this week, achieving three out of four possible points. Despite the importance of a Presidents Cup win, Kim is poised to compete at the Asian Games at Kasugi Country Club in Japan starting Wednesday.

“A top finish at the Asian Games holds greater significance for Kim,” experts suggest.

A gold medal in the men’s individual or team competition at the Asian Games would allow Kim to bypass mandatory military service in South Korea. This exemption is crucial for many athletes, under South Korean law, which requires most able-bodied men to serve for 18 to 21 months.

Kim is scheduled to fly to Japan late Sunday afternoon, right after facing Wyndham Clark in Sunday’s singles matches, as the Asian Games commence on Wednesday.

As per the regulations, athletes can avoid military service by securing any Olympic medal or with a gold at the Asian Games. These exemptions also extend to classical artists who excel internationally.

Previously, Kim narrowly missed a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, finishing four shots behind third place. Conversely, American Scottie Scheffler clinched the gold medal in Paris.

Sungjae Im and Si Woo Kim, fellow competitors on the current International team, snagged a gold medal in the team competition at the 2023 Asian Games.

Tom Kim will be joined by Do-yeob Moon and S.H. Kim on South Korea’s Asian Games team this year.

The 24-year-old is a notable PGA Tour winner, holding four titles. He remains one of the four players on the International team to compete in all first four sessions of this year’s Presidents Cup.
