The UEFA Nations League match between Ireland and Israel took place on Sunday in Hungary amid heightened tensions and controversy. Irish fans had called for a boycott of the match due to Israel’s actions in Gaza following the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas that resulted in nearly 1,200 deaths.
The match itself was moved to a neutral location with no spectators, following the Football Association of Ireland’s (FAI) request to UEFA to exclude Israel from club and international play, which was ultimately denied. Despite the refusal, the Irish team expressed their protest during the match.
During the Israeli national anthem, Irish players donned black armbands and looked towards the ground, their hands held behind their backs, as a form of silent protest. Ireland’s captain, Dara O’Shea, refrained from shaking hands with Israeli players during the pre-match engagements. Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu opted out of the match, citing his personal belief against the killing of innocents. Bazunu clarified that his protest was not against Israeli citizens or the Jewish community but the ongoing violence in the region.
While Ireland’s Prime Minister Micheál Martin condemned antisemitism, he criticized Israel’s military response as disproportionate. Irish players held extensive discussions before deciding to participate in the match. FAI CEO David Courell confirmed their decision followed four hours of discussion and voting.
Israel’s Football Association emphasized separating politics from sports. Both nations fielded their teams, and Ireland won the match with a decisive 3-0 victory.
