GoFundMe Halts Fundraiser Over Authenticity Concerns

GoFundMe recently closed a fundraising campaign for Donald Johnson, an 81-year-old man, which had gathered nearly $740,000. The funds were intended to provide cancer treatment for his wife. The decision to suspend the fundraiser followed allegations that Johnson’s daughter had created it under a false identity.

On September 25, GoFundMe received a notification that “Erin H,” the user who initiated the campaign, was actually Johnson’s daughter. There was no mention of her familial connection in the fundraiser description. Erin admitted to the relationship in a recorded call when questioned by GoFundMe.

The archived fundraiser page had Erin stating that she was reaching out to the community due to witnessing a distressing scene. She described seeing Johnson struggling with her heavy luggage, which had been lost during a recent flight. Johnson was reportedly raising money for his wife, Josephine, who has been married to him for 57 years and requires cancer treatment.

GoFundMe issued a statement to Fox4, emphasizing their priority to maintain a safe and trustworthy platform. They stated, “After further review by our Trust & Safety team, the organizer account and fundraiser have been found in violation of our Terms of Service, and the fundraiser removed and refunded.”

The company highlighted the importance of transparency and authenticity, which are enforced by both GoFundMe and its payment processors. These standards aim to protect donor generosity and ensure support for those genuinely in need.
