A New Chapter for the Lakers: Life Without LeBron James

The Los Angeles Lakers embark on a new chapter as they face their first season in eight years without LeBron James. Over the past seasons, James achieved numerous milestones and historic moments, including memorable plays with his son, Bronny James. Notably, Bronny was drafted by the Lakers at No. 55 in 2024, and together, they achieved the first father-son assist in a game.

This offseason marked a significant shift. LeBron James left the Lakers, choosing to explore free agency. After much anticipation and consideration of rejoining the Cleveland Cavaliers or Miami Heat, James opted for a two-year contract with the Philadelphia 76ers.

During the Lakers’ training camp’s media session, Bronny James expressed his thoughts on proceeding without his father on the team. “Feels like he’s not here. … He’s my dad. I spent almost 22 years with him, so, just another experience that I’m gonna be a part of, and I’m excited how it’s gonna feel during the season, too. Looking forward to it,” he shared with reporters, describing it as “something different.”

The Lakers’ roster has seen changes, with the addition of Walker Kessler in a sign-and-trade deal with the Utah Jazz. Further bolstering their lineup, they brought in Quentin Grimes and Collin Sexton to strengthen the backcourt.

Last season, Bronny James played a reserve role on the main roster and also competed with the G League’s South Bay Lakers, renamed the Coachella Valley Lakers. In 42 games, Bronny averaged 2.9 points, 1.2 assists, and 0.6 rebounds in about 8.9 minutes per game. The NBA community questions whether he will rise as a star or face challenges in the league where his father thrived.

Expressing optimism, Bronny shared, “I’m excited for the experience, to experience something different with him not being here and to see how the staff treats me without him being there and all my teammates and stuff like that. I’m excited for it, and I’m excited for the season.”

The Lakers open their regular season on Oct. 21 against the Golden State Warriors. A noteworthy event could occur on Christmas Day, when Bronny and LeBron might face each other for the first time on the court, as the Lakers take on the 76ers.
