Matt Russo’s Key Role at Naperville Central

Naperville Central’s center, Matt Russo, plays a crucial yet often overlooked role on the football field. The action begins with his snap, setting the stage for every play. “It’s an amazing position because I get to handle the ball every play,” Russo shared. “It’s vital, and I love doing it for my teammates.”

Russo, standing at 5-foot-9 and weighing 235 pounds, is cherished by teammates and coaches alike. “Having a center like him is invaluable,” said senior quarterback Simon Hayes following their 36-29 victory over Metea Valley. “Watching him sacrifice his body for blocks is inspiring.” Hayes and Russo share a history, having risen from the freshman B team to varsity starters together. “I adore him,” Hayes added.

Russo’s football journey began in his freshman year, when he was placed at center. “My coach recognized my ability to snap,” Russo said. Initially part of the sophomore team as center, he also played right tackle before securing the center position again this year.

Coach Mike Ulreich values Russo’s adaptability. “Matt tackled for seven games last year. He’s not built like a tackle, but he seized the role when needed and showed immense dedication,” Ulreich noted.

The center position demands resilience and intellect. Russo acknowledges the presnap duties as particularly challenging. “It’s about calling out fronts and directing teammates,” he explained. This includes identifying formations and ensuring effective pass protection.

“He makes all the calls,” Ulreich praised. “Matt handles our run and front calls impeccably.”

While offensive linemen rarely appear in stat sheets, coaches appreciate their contributions. Ulreich highlights Russo’s selflessness in team play. “Every snap, he’s committed. There’s no teammate better than Matt Russo.”

Hayes expressed his trust in Russo’s reliability at the center position. Despite four first-half turnovers and a couple of interceptions, Hayes acknowledges Russo’s crucial role in rallying the team through a powerful running game. Russo and the O-line allowed Redhawks to rush for 257 yards, with Landon Nelson achieving a personal best of 219 yards.

Ulreich credits the team’s off-season dedication, with Russo leading by example. “Matt’s efforts are remarkable.”
