The competition for Congress is in its final phase. Republicans and Democrats have just over a month to find out who will influence the remaining two years of President Donald Trump’s term. According to the recent Fox News Power Rankings, Democrats lead with a projected 215 seats, leaving Republicans at 201. However, 19 seats remain unpredictable, creating a potential shift in power.
Republicans see potential due to the Democratic Party’s leftward shift, marked by the success of socialist candidates. This could create opportunities for the GOP in several key areas.
Key Districts in Play
Fox News ranks various House districts held by Democrats where Republicans could make vital gains.
Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District
Democrat Rep. Shomari Figures faces re-election in a district now favoring Republicans. Due to a 2023 Supreme Court mandate, Alabama crafted a second Black opportunity district. This decision influenced Figures’ initial win and has this seat projected as ‘likely Republican’ by both Fox News and the Cook Political Report (CPR).
Florida’s Districts
Redistricting in Florida aims to benefit Republicans. Rep. Darren Soto’s 9th District shows Trump would have prevailed by 18%. Projections suggest a slight Republican advantage. Meanwhile, the 14th District remains competitive despite redistricting favoring rural Republican territories. Additionally, the 22nd District has turned into a battleground as incumbents shifted their focus elsewhere. Trump’s hypothetical win by 10% indicates potential Republican gains.
Jared Moskowitz is running in Florida’s 25th District under new boundaries that advantage Republicans. Nevertheless, Moskowitz’s bipartisan record provides hope for Democrats as Fox News labels the seat leaning Democrat.
Louisiana’s 6th Congressional District
Louisiana faces redistricting effects similar to Alabama’s due to Supreme Court decisions. Republicans redrew the 6th District post-2024 elections, adjusting its demographic balance. With Democrat Cleo Fields retiring, this district could swing Republican as forecasted by both Fox News and CPR.
Northeast and Southern Districts
Maine’s 2nd District becomes a Republican target with Jared Golden’s retirement. Paul LePage runs for this seat, generally seen as a toss-up per Fox News. Meanwhile, North Carolina’s 1st District and Ohio’s 9th District involve new maps enhancing Republican prospects. Notably, Ohio’s Rep. Marcy Kaptur, often challenged by redistricting, continues her battle in an altered political field.
GOP Strategy
Republicans aim to capitalize on demographic and political shifts across these key districts. Redistricting implements a significant strategic emphasis as the GOP aims to gain traction in historically Democratic territories.
