Judge to Decide on Access Restrictions in Tyler Robinson Hearing

3 weeks ago 0

A decision is pending on whether to limit public and media access to a significant hearing in the case against Tyler Robinson, accused of killing Charlie Kirk. The defense team has requested that Judge Tony Graf restrict entry to the preliminary hearing scheduled from July 6 to 10. During this hearing, prosecutors will need to show sufficient evidence to proceed with a trial.

The defense also seeks to seal exhibits intended for the hearing, suggesting that public disclosure could prejudice the jury pool. The case has attracted considerable media attention, and Robinson’s lawyers argue that reports have sometimes misrepresented their client. The 23-year-old from southwestern Utah faces charges including aggravated murder linked to the September 10 assassination of Kirk at Utah Valley University.

Prosecutors have expressed intent to pursue the death penalty should Robinson be convicted, though he has not yet pleaded. They maintain the preliminary hearing should generally be open, but concur that media restrictions are sensible for certain exhibits. These exhibits include forensic analyses, surveillance footage, witness statements, autopsy results, and alleged messages from Robinson admitting to the crime.

Evidence reportedly ties Robinson’s DNA to the rifle used in the murder. His DNA was found on the trigger, a fired cartridge case, two unfired cartridges, and a towel used to wrap the gun. Additionally, Robinson is said to have left a note for his romantic partner expressing his intention to target Kirk.
