A realtor from Irvine, California, was arrested on Sunday for allegedly acting as an unregistered agent of the Chinese government. Wanying ‘Heather’ Zhang, aged 34, was apprehended by FBI agents at Los Angeles International Airport while she was preparing to travel to China. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli made this announcement on X.
Zhang faces accusations of traveling to Seattle in 2025 to conduct surveillance on a close relative of a Taiwanese government official. She reportedly sent photos, videos, and license plate details to Chinese officials. According to Essayli, ‘She coordinated the trip with an associate and used tradecraft to avoid detection.’ He also mentioned that Zhang failed to notify the Attorney General of her actions for a foreign government, which constitutes a federal offense.
