Legal Motions Filed in Alex Murdaugh Case Amid Allegations Against Police

1 hour ago 0

Attorneys for Alex Murdaugh have accused prosecutors of withholding crucial evidence in his murder retrial. They claim that a witness statement suggests a South Carolina police chief may have handled the weapons used in the 2021 murder of Murdaugh’s wife and son, and arranged for a change of clothes after the incident. Murdaugh was initially convicted in 2023 for these murders at the Moselle property in Colleton County. However, the South Carolina Supreme Court overturned these convictions citing jury misconduct. A new trial is set for April 5, 2027.

Murdaugh’s attorneys have filed a motion highlighting press reports about a testimony presented to a state grand jury. It alleges that Yemassee Police Chief Greg Alexander was seen with the murder weapons shortly after the killings. The report also indicates an investigation into another Yemassee officer concerning weapon and clothing transport.

According to those reports, witnesses have testified that the Chief of Police of the Town of Yemassee, Greg Alexander, was seen with the murder weapons in the immediate aftermath of the June 7, 2021, killings, and that a second Yemassee officer is under investigation for transporting and concealing weapons and clothing, the filing states.

The Post and Courier reported a Lowcountry official claimed Chief Alexander mentioned arriving early at the murder scene and providing new clothes for Murdaugh. This official believed the weapons and clothes were briefly stored at the police station.

During the 2023 trial, prosecutors alleged Murdaugh killed his family using two different weapons. They said he cleaned up with a water hose, changed clothes, and hid the weapons at his parents’ house before disposing of them later. Police have not recovered the murder weapons so far.

Chief Alexander, through his lawyer Joe McCulloch, has denied these accusations. Fox News contacted both Alexander and McCulloch for comments.

The defense’s motion requests all information prosecutors might have on the handling and concealment of the murder weapons, including the relevant witness statement given to South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. They have also asked for interview reports and grand jury testimony on the matter.

Fox News Digital sought comments from the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office. Adam Sabes, a reporter for Fox News Digital, can be contacted with any story tips at [email protected] or on Twitter @asabes10.
