President Donald Trump reached out to ‘TODAY’ co-anchor Savannah Guthrie on Wednesday to express his support as investigations into the disappearance of her mother, Nancy Guthrie, continue at both state and federal levels.
After an interview with NBC Nightly News anchor Tom Llamas, Trump contacted Savannah Guthrie, offering reassurance that all necessary resources were at the family’s disposal. Trump expressed awareness of Savannah’s close bond with her 84-year-old mother, who went missing from her home near Tucson, Arizona, on Sunday afternoon, after failing to attend church.
Savannah Guthrie expressed her gratitude towards the President for taking the time to reach out to her family, revealing that they are in a state of devastation and are praying, according to Llamas. She emphasized that the family’s immediate need is for prayers and also thanked both local and federal authorities for their diligent work on the case.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has stated their belief that Nancy Guthrie might have been abducted during the night, mentioning possibilities of kidnapping or abduction. They have reportedly received ‘hundreds of leads’ but have not found any credible evidence indicating that her disappearance was targeted.
As of Wednesday, the sheriff’s department reported the absence of a suspect or person of interest in the ongoing case.
The FBI is now actively involved in the investigation, supplemented by around 100 detectives from the sheriff’s office. On Tuesday, Trump committed to deploying additional federal agents to aid in the search efforts.
Nancy Guthrie, whose mobility is limited and who is without her essential daily medication, was described by Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos as having no cognitive impairments that would link her disappearance to conditions like dementia. He characterized her mental state as being ‘sharp as a tack.’
In an NBC News interview, Sheriff Nanos stated, “We operate with the hope that she is here, she’s present, she’s alive, and our goal is to bring her home safely.”
