Michael Douglas has opened up about his past in his new memoir, One Helluva Ride. The 82-year-old actor disclosed details about an on-set affair with a co-star nearly 20 years his junior while working on the 1992 film, Basic Instinct.
Initially, there was speculation that Douglas and his on-screen partner, Sharon Stone, were involved romantically off-screen. However, Douglas clarified in the memoir that his real-life affair was with Jeanne Tripplehorn, not Stone. He said, “The truth is, I fell very hard for Jeanne despite our nearly 20-year age difference.” He even considered leaving his first wife, Diandra Luker, for Tripplehorn. At the time, Douglas and Luker were separated, though not officially divorced. Luker filed for divorce in 1995.
Douglas wrote that his relationship with Tripplehorn lasted throughout the film’s production. Once filming concluded, they parted ways, but he expressed admiration for her as an actress and a person.
I will always think of her as an amazing actress and a truly terrific woman that I was very fortunate to spend time with.
Apart from this, Douglas also admitted to a past affair with Kathleen Turner during the filming of the 1984 movie, Romancing the Stone. He revealed that they developed a relationship due to the intense working conditions and mutual respect. Both Douglas and Turner had previously denied the affair to protect Douglas’s marriage and his son, Cameron.
Douglas and Turner maintained their secrecy, even sneaking into each other’s rooms after filming. They ended their relationship when Luker visited the set, signaling to Turner that she and Douglas were still married. Luker ultimately filed for divorce in 1995. Douglas later married Catherine Zeta-Jones in 2000, and they have two children, Dylan and Carys.
