Over the weekend, Pierre Damas Bel’s family laid him to rest. The 20-year-old student from Haiti had faced the loss of his legal immigration status. This occurred in July when the Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration to terminate temporary protections for numerous Haitians.
Following the change in his immigration status, Bel tragically died by suicide. This occurred a month after immigration authorities mandated that he wear an ankle monitor. The circumstances leading to his death highlight the impact of immigration policy changes on individual lives.
William Brangham reported on the incident. He is known for his award-winning work as a correspondent, producer, and substitute anchor for PBS NewsHour. In addition, Brangham hosts Horizons from PBS News.
