Ana Navarro on Remaining a Republican for Influence in Primaries

50 minutes ago 0

Ana Navarro, a former Republican strategist and known critic of President Donald Trump, shared her reasons for staying registered as a Republican voter with actor Michael Douglas on “The View”. She stated that her decision is strategic, meant to influence the primaries in Florida, a state with closed primaries.

Douglas questioned Navarro about her party affiliation, prompting her to clarify her stance. “I’ll tell you why,” Navarro responded, citing her desire to vote in the Republican primaries to oppose certain candidates.

Navarro has been criticized by conservatives for aligning with her co-hosts on various policies despite being a Republican. She even participated as a host at the Democratic National Convention in 2024 and expressed support for Kamala Harris in the presidential election.

Navarro defended her position in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. She contended that adhering to the views of Donald Trump does not define traditional Republican values.

Her political stance also drew attention in 2019 when she revealed her support for Jeb Bush’s presidential campaign. Navarro describes herself as an “old-fashioned Republican,” aligning with free trade, strong foreign policies, and pro-immigration views.

The topic arose again in 2022 when co-host Sunny Hostin questioned her Republican identity. Navarro countered with a comparison to religious affiliation, asking why Hostin still identified as Catholic despite differences in belief.

Navarro recently faced backlash when she encouraged “The View” audience to support a Democratic candidate in a critical Florida congressional race. This led to discussions about her role on the show.

Mary Marslender, a Republican consultant, criticized Navarro’s position, calling her a “fake Republican” for “The View.” Marslender argued that Navarro maintains her Republican registration solely for media appearances, claiming her credentials are used to criticize true Republicans.
