Sara Gilio’s Rising Journey with Oswego Panthers

1 day ago 0

Last season, Sara Gilio of Oswego was learning the ropes on the varsity level as a sophomore, managing to play despite a fractured foot sustained mid-season. This year, Gilio is advancing confidently. The junior outside hitter is now making a mark statistically alongside Dayton recruit Hannah Herrick, giving the Panthers strength on the left side.

Gilio commented, “Hannah has always been someone I looked up to. We’ve played together since we were young. Competing with her is amazing. I believe we both add to the team’s success. It’s a valuable opportunity for me, especially with where she’s heading for college.”

During a recent match, Gilio led with seven kills and four aces, securing a 25-12, 25-12 win over Oswego East. Herrick supported the team with five kills and four aces. Ashley Crouch from Oswego East contributed three kills, while Tori Vlcek added two.

The previous season, Gilio was sidelined for a month due to her foot injury. She returned just before the playoffs, not yet in peak form. “She managed with what she had then,” noted Oswego coach Gary Mosley. “Currently, she’s performing well. Her mindset is incredible.”

Confidence is a key factor that often helps athletes reach new potential. “I’d say it’s confidence,” Gilio explained. “Last year as a sophomore was challenging. Being a junior now feels more comfortable and I feel I belong. It’s about confidence.”

The results reflect this progress. Herrick leads the team with 191 kills, closely followed by Gilio with 174. “It’s interesting, you can see it in the stats,” Mosley said. “She’s getting more comfortable on the court.”

Herrick acknowledges the growth as well. She understands the challenges Gilio faces, having experienced them herself. “It’s fantastic,” Herrick remarked. “I enjoy playing with her; she’s like a little sister to me on the court, and I love supporting her emotionally and in play.”

Herrick, having gone through the college recruiting process, is also a resource for Gilio, who remains uncommitted but is in contact with some coaches. “She’s always been a confidante,” Gilio said of Herrick. “We share a similar work ethic.”

While Gilio improves her hitting stats, she’s also excelling at the service line. During the second game of a recent match, Gilio served five consecutive points, including three aces, building a 6-2 lead.

“I love serving,” Gilio expressed. “It sets up the play, so it’s crucial. It’s a lot of fun.”

Coach Mosley is pleased with Gilio’s progress. “Few players are as coachable as her,” Mosley commented. “She’s humble and you can see her talent developing.”

Mosley believes in Gilio’s potential to reach heights similar to Herrick. “What will her peak be? It’s up to her,” Mosley stated. “Others may overlook her, but someone will recognize her potential.”
