Glen Powell, known for his role in Top Gun: Maverick, prefers to avoid Hollywood’s political debates. He shared his views with Esquire, explaining his decision to steer clear of political discourse.
Powell believes politics often lead to division. He expressed frustration with conversations focused more on proving points than fostering healthy discussions. Engaging in politics, he noted, is not something he finds possible at this time.
“Over time, I realized that politics divide people. People trying to prove their point – for me, it’s the worst version of a conversation. I genuinely do not like the discourse. It’s not as healthy as it once was,” Powell explained to Esquire.
Despite growing up with a mother involved in the Reagan administration, politics were not a frequent topic at home. He reiterated this sentiment to The Guardian, emphasizing his interest in activities that bring people together, rather than divide.
Hollywood’s Political Landscape
As political divides grow, even the biggest Hollywood stars struggle to appeal to diverse audiences. Powell discussed whether entertainment could still unite people, considering action movies as a refuge from political conflicts.
“There’s a universal language of action, which is also why those movies translate so well internationally,” Powell said. He continued stating that movies are how he expresses himself, contrasting them with political discourse.
He has become a prominent figure in Hollywood, with notable performances in films such as Anyone But You and Twisters. Despite initial difficulties breaking into acting, Powell persevered through challenges and criticism.
Career and Personal Life
Powell maintains momentum with projects such as How to Make a Killing, and he’s set for major roles in upcoming films like The Comeback King and The Great Beyond. Off-set, Powell has found support in his relationship with Michelle Randolph.
“Life is fast for both of us… And we have the same values,” Powell stated to Esquire. He appreciates having someone who understands the demands of Hollywood and supports him both personally and professionally.
