Strath Haven High School Plans Major Renovations with Gender-Neutral Facilities

1 hour ago 0

Strath Haven High School in Pennsylvania is set to undergo significant renovations, estimated to cost around $76 million. Central to these plans is the construction of gender-neutral bathroom facilities, as revealed in a presentation by the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District.

Renovation Highlights

The plan involves creating ‘universal toilet rooms’ on multiple floors. These facilities will replace the current gendered bathrooms. Each floor will feature larger, universal bathroom spaces designed for increased student privacy. Student newspaper The Panther Press shared that the new design will include individual stalls and shared sink areas.

Besides the bathroom overhaul, the renovation aims to introduce new science classrooms, improve infrastructure, and expand academic spaces.

Design Features

The proposal includes a complete revamp of the existing restroom configurations. Architect Mike Kelly explained the design incorporates fully enclosed stalls with floor-to-ceiling walls, promoting privacy and security. The bathrooms will feature technology such as vape detectors and fire alarm devices. Entry and exit points will have camera surveillance, aiding supervision without compromising privacy within the stalls.

Traditional restroom formats will remain in some areas. However, the focus is on enhancing privacy and safety, a growing trend in many schools.

Budget and Approvals

The Wallingford-Swarthmore Board of School Directors has approved the schematic design, with a project budget capped at $70 million. Most funding will upgrade the school’s existing infrastructure. Details on costs and allocations are available in the publicly posted design presentation.

A spokesperson confirmed the district’s commitment to this renovation plan, highlighting the benefits for student privacy and behavior management.
