Chicago Hotel Workers Strike During Marathon Weekend

1 day ago 0

Workers at six hotels in Chicago have commenced a strike as the city prepares for the marathon weekend. The strike action involves staff members such as room attendants, dishwashers, front desk agents, and servers, all represented by the union Unite Here Local 1.

The contracts covering around 7,000 hotel workers in Chicago expired on August 31 according to the union. Last month, hotel workers voted in favor of authorizing strikes. Noteworthy participants among those who went on strike outside notable hotels include Eman Almoukdad, Juan Rivera, and Diana Almazan. Strikes are confirmed at Millennium Hotel Knickerbocker Chicago, Palmer House, Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Waldorf Astoria Chicago, and two Westin locations – River North and Michigan Avenue.

Karen Kent, President of Unite Here, expressed concern stating that hotel workers remain overworked while hotel executives maximize profits. She highlighted the financial struggles of these workers in paying rent and providing for their families.

The union negotiates contracts separately with different employers and indicated that additional strikes might occur as no settlements have been finalized. The Illinois Hotel and Lodging Association posted its concerns over the potential implications of the strike on employees, visitors, and the city, acknowledging that hotels have contingency plans prepared.

The last significant hotel worker strike in Chicago happened in 2018. Workers then walked out at over 24 hotels.

This situation is continuing to evolve.
