Marvin Harrison Jr. is nearing the end of his tenure with the Arizona Cardinals. This marks a swift conclusion to his journey with the team as a first-round draft pick. Drafted three seasons ago, Harrison carried high expectations due to his legendary family background. Reports from ESPN and OutKick confirm the team is finalizing a trade deal, making him inactive for the upcoming game against the Detroit Lions.
Initially, the team did not specify Harrison’s next destination. An NFL source speculated that the Cardinals might have allowed the rumor to circulate to increase trade offers for Harrison. It seems apparent he will soon play for a different team.
“CARDINALS’ MARVIN HARRISON JR LOOKS ENTIRELY DISINTERESTED AS SEASON GETS OFF TO A PUTRID START,” stated a report.
Despite showing initial promise, Harrison has since struggled. He was the fourth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, chosen before many others who became successful starters. Issues arose with his production and effort, raising doubts about his standing within the team.
Arizona’s new coach, Mike LaFleur, tried supporting Harrison, explaining, “I don’t see it that way. I think his running style is different than some other people’s.” He acknowledged, however, that other players were cementing their roles as the team had limited plays weekly. Coach LaFleur attributed some of Harrison’s challenges to defensive strategies and inconsistent quarterback performance. Yet, notable past receivers like Larry Fitzgerald managed to thrive under similar conditions, being known for reliable play and effort.
Persistent trade rumors are partly due to Harrison’s eligibility for a contract extension. The Cardinals appear uncertain about offering a lucrative deal, especially with Michael Wilson outperforming Harrison, who ranks fifth in team targets.
Arizona Cardinals General Manager Monti Ossenfort mentioned on October 9 that Harrison “is a big part of what we’re doing.” However, the team’s interest may focus more on trading him for future benefits rather than extending his contract.
Harrison showed talent in his rookie season with 62 receptions for 885 yards and eight touchdowns. However, the anticipated progress did not occur in subsequent seasons.
Numerous teams have inquired about acquiring Harrison, including the Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, Buffalo Bills, New England Patriots, and even the San Francisco 49ers. However, a trade with the 49ers would be complex since they share a division with the Cardinals. Arizona seeks a package involving a second-round pick in exchange for Harrison.
The situation highlights a recurring issue for struggling teams like the Cardinals. They seem poised to trade a former first-round pick for a future second-round selection without adequate return on their initial investment.
