Sebastian Stan Defends ‘Conservative’ Themes in Film ‘Fjord’

Actor Sebastian Stan defended the perceived ‘conservative’ themes of his latest film, “Fjord,” during his appearance on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show.” The film, starring Stan and Renate Reinsve, revolves around a Romanian Norwegian Christian couple who move to a Norwegian village. Their traditional values attract suspicion in what is seen as a progressive society, leading to accusations of child abuse.

During the interview, host Michael Kosta noted that the film’s themes can be viewed as conservative, prompting Stan to agree but clarify that this label doesn’t negate the issues explored in the film. He argued for a balanced view that allows for dialogue between differing perspectives on family and parenting.

“I think that’s a pretty fair assessment, but that should not necessarily cancel out the issues that … this family is facing or … the desire … to raise the kids in the best way they can,” Stan said.

Stan emphasized the importance of curiosity over judgment concerning families trying to maintain cohesion. He encouraged audiences to approach such stories with an open mind, suggesting that the family’s actions might be grounded in honest intentions.

In a separate interview with USA Today, Stan rejected the notion that the film promotes a ‘right-wing ideology.’ He described claims of the film being labeled a ‘MAGA film’ as misguided, underscoring the universal nature of the immigrant family’s struggle against societal division.

“… It’s about an immigrant family … being torn apart. We could change Norway for the United States, and Romania for Mexico, or any number of places where that’s happening,” Stan explained.

Stan expressed concern about online culture’s quickness to judge without understanding nuances, calling it dangerous and naive.

“Fjord” takes inspiration from a real 2015 case involving Ruth and Marius Bodnariu, who had their children temporarily removed amid abuse suspicions tied to their religious beliefs. Eventually, the family was reunited after several legal battles.

Despite his critical stance on President Donald Trump, Stan portrayed a young version of him in the 2024 film “The Apprentice.” Stan defended his choice, stating the importance of portraying figures subject to polarized perceptions to encourage a grounded understanding.

Curtis Houck from NewsBusters commented on Stan’s remarks, highlighting irony given Stan’s role in “The Apprentice,” a film embraced by Hollywood but contrary to “Fjord,” which challenges the entertainment industry’s norms.
