The White House responded strongly to Natalie Maines, the lead singer of The Chicks, following her critical remarks about President Donald Trump. Maines launched a personal attack, which led to the White House calling her a “despicable nobody” with a “peanut-sized brain.”
Maines’ comments came as she and her bandmates, Emily Strayer and Martie Maguire, began their “Taking the Long Way” anniversary tour in Manhattan. Her statement drew a parallel to the controversial remarks she made about former President George W. Bush over two decades ago. This time, she mentioned welcoming Bush back compared to Trump.
The White House issued a scathing response, alleging that Maines suffers from “Trump Derangement Syndrome” and criticizing her remarks during the tour. Maines expressed that she would “never” comply with the “shut up and sing” mentality. Reflecting on her previous criticism of Bush, she joked about preferring him over the current presidency.
The backlash Maines received in 2003 involved her telling an audience, “Just so you know, we do not want this war, this violence, and we’re ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas.”
Opinions on social media varied. While some expressed fatigue over political commentary during concerts, others supported The Chicks’ outspokenness. One Instagram user praised them for voicing their opinion, while another preferred a focus on music.
This isn’t the first instance of Maines criticizing Trump. In May, she posted a profanity-laden rant, accusing the president of undermining democracy. The White House reiterated its condemnation of Maines in response to these social media posts.
While some are supportive of Maines’ political statements, criticism remains. A spokesperson for Maines has not commented further on the matter.
