President Donald Trump has gained notoriety for his ability to persuade millions of voters with claims that have often been proven false. His strategies have allowed him electoral success, yet as midterm elections begin, many Americans are reconsidering his influence. A significant number now see the adverse effects of his policies, such as tariffs and military actions, on everyday living costs like gasoline and groceries.
Recent data reflects a shift in public opinion. An Associated Press-NORC Center Public Affairs Research poll indicated that 71% of American adults disapprove of Trump’s handling of the war in Iran, and 65% attribute high prices to his policies. The New York Times compiled poll averages showing less than 40% approval for Trump’s overall performance.
Despite these figures, Trump denies responsibility for high prices and maintains he is an economic success, asserting that public relations are his only downfall. He deems polls, like those from Time Magazine, that depict his poor approval as ‘fake’ and ‘corrupt’. Industry-standard pollsters strive for accuracy and do not intentionally harm their reputations by falsifying data.
Trump frequently mislabels unfavorable content, including polls, news, and unsuccessful elections, as ‘fake’ or ‘hoaxes’. CNN’s Daniel Dale documented over 8,500 false statements from Trump up to September 2020, a figure further corroborated by The Washington Post which noted 30,573 misleading claims during his term, peaking at 503 claims in one day before the 2020 election.
His promises during the 2024 campaign, such as cutting home costs by half and reducing gasoline below $2, have not materialized. An Economist-YouGov poll revealed only 21% of Americans trust Trump’s pledge to grant individuals $5,000 if Republicans win the midterms. Simultaneously, 50% believe the Iran conflict could persist beyond a year, contrasting Trump’s promise for a swift resolution post-midterms.
Trump’s presidency painted a bleak picture with policy decisions affecting healthcare, immigration, voting rights, and other areas. His actions have created challenges for many Americans, from rising costs to erosion of rights. His campaign urges support for Republicans to sustain their congressional majority, potentially exacerbating these issues.
As Trump mobilizes support, he encourages voters to act as if he’s personally on the ballots. Democratic advocates hope this encourages voting against his policies. History shows even the most adept deceivers eventually face justice; a Democratic victory in at least one congressional chamber could hold Trump accountable. This reflects sentiments shared by A. Scott Bolden, a legal professional and political contributor.
