Legal Scrutiny on Rep. Ilhan Omar
Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., faces increased legal pressure as federal investigations delve into her immigration history and financial disclosures, further intensified by a recent raid on her home. Fox News justice correspondent David Spunt reported that the Department of Justice (DOJ) has issued subpoenas to her family members. Former federal prosecutor Andrew Cherkasky discussed the possible legal and political implications of these investigations on a televised segment with host Harris Faulkner.
Raid and Immigration History Investigation
Federal authorities confiscated Rep. Omar’s cell phone during a raid at her Washington, D.C. residence. This action is part of a criminal fraud inquiry into her immigration documentation. Investigators are evaluating whether Omar’s family provided false details about her age upon immigrating to the U.S. in 1995. Omar became a naturalized citizen in 2000, and the investigation centers on disparities between the age recorded on her application and her actual birth date.
A source familiar with the investigation revealed over a dozen subpoenas were issued to Omar’s family following the Washington, D.C. raid.
Reportedly, Omar’s age was recorded as 17 when she obtained citizenship, allowing her to automatically acquire it through her father’s naturalization. Questions about Omar’s age emerged after her staff reportedly requested a Minnesota public library to amend her birth year in historical records from 1981 to 1982.
Federal Investigation Details
Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents conducted the raid Monday morning, a source told Fox News Digital. Omar’s husband, Tim Mynett, expressed confidence regarding the investigation. He stated, “My wife came here when she was 12 years old as a child war refugee. No concerns.” Authorities are also reviewing information supplied by Omar’s late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, in his U.S. entry application, suspecting statements may be untrue.
Omar has repudiated any misconduct and criticized the Trump administration for weaponizing federal law enforcement against political adversaries. Her office declared, “Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has been targeted with inflammatory rhetoric by Donald Trump for a decade. These attacks have escalated to a pointless federal raid. She has done nothing wrong. No president should exploit federal power to intimidate political enemies.”
Separate Inquiry and Office Response
Besides the immigration investigation, authorities are reviewing Omar’s federal financial disclosures. Officials clarified this financial disclosure review is distinct from the home raid investigation. Fox News Digital reached out to Omar’s office for inquiries.
