Netflix has commissioned a documentary focusing on the fake football player scheme orchestrated by Daejon Love. The production, titled “Untold: Wide Deceiver,” will delve into the deception executed by Love, a 35-year-old man accused of defrauding women out of over $1.3 million. Love posed as a wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers using custom helmets and prop money as part of his elaborate ruse.
Federal investigators have described how Love and his accomplice, Taylor Jamie Chan, utilized dating platforms such as Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, and Facebook Dating to target victims across California, Oregon, and Washington. In pursuit of his scam, Love staged fake workouts, complete with videos of himself running routes on public beaches while donning a replica 49ers helmet.
The documentary will provide insights into the operation and feature interviews with victims who were ensnared by the scheme. Love’s tactics included staging mock contract signings and recording videos to reinforce his fabricated identity as a football player, despite confirmation from the NFL and the 49ers that he was never associated with them.
As part of the scam, victims were convinced to take out high-interest loans to fund supposed investment programs, none of which existed. Instead, Love spent the money on luxury cars, designer jewelry, and lavish vacations to maintain the illusion of wealth and attract new targets. Once inquiries or financial demands were made by victims, Love ceased contact with them.
The scheme came to an end in August when federal agents apprehended Love and Chan in Boise, Idaho. Love faces federal conspiracy and wire fraud charges, with the FBI identifying numerous victims across several states. He has pleaded not guilty and awaits trial on December 15.
