American Airlines Cuts Routes to Three Destinations

2 hours ago 0

American Airlines has ceased operations to three locations this year: Santa Maria in California, Tijuana in Mexico, and Doha in Qatar. These decisions limit travel choices for some passengers.

Service Discontinuation

The airline’s decision affects Santa Maria, as it is left without a major U.S. carrier. Tijuana loses its only nonstop route managed by a U.S. airline. American Airlines removed flights from Phoenix to these cities, fully withdrawing from both destinations.

Allegiant Air is now the sole commercial operator at Santa Maria airport, offering flights to Las Vegas. Qatar Airways has taken responsibility for the Philadelphia-Doha route, ensuring it continues post-American Airlines’ withdrawal.

Reason for Route Cuts

American Airlines said performance and network changes prompted the route cuts this year, according to a spokesperson. The Santa Maria service operated under the American Eagle brand with SkyWest Airlines. SkyWest decided to end this service, effective May 7.

Similarly, the Philadelphia-Doha route was permanently dropped in June due to low performance, following temporary suspensions for regional conflicts. Bri Harper from American Airlines stated that optimizing the airline’s network and fleet led to ceasing service in Doha.

In August, Tijuana faced the same fate when its route did not meet expectations, according to reports.

Industry Insights

Route cancellations are a regular occurrence in the airline industry. Aviation expert Steven Arroyo explained to Fox News that airlines often cut routes that do not generate profit.

“If airlines are consistently not making money on a route, they’re going to pull out,” Arroyo commented. “It’s part of the economic reality of running an airline efficiently.”

Advice for Travelers

Arroyo advised travelers to thoroughly check routes and ticket prices before planning trips. Watching for changes in flight status and securing alternative plans can prevent inconvenience.

Particularly for trips to the Middle East, monitoring flights is crucial. Travelers should frequently visit the airline’s website for updates and prepare to adjust travel plans if necessary.
