U.S. Officials Warn Against Travel to Djerba Amid Terror Threats

41 minutes ago 0

U.S. officials cautioned Americans to avoid the popular tourist destination of Djerba on Wednesday, as heightened threats are anticipated around the anniversary of the October 7, 2023 terrorist attacks on Israel. The warning came from the U.S. Embassy in Tunisia, highlighting concerns for travelers visiting this major tourist island known for its white-sand beaches and resorts.

The embassy’s statement advised, “Avoid travel to the island of Djerba on or around October 7, 2026.” Officials also urged Americans to steer clear of large gatherings, remain alert, and be aware of their surroundings. The advisory included recommendations to avoid areas with a heavy police presence and to keep monitoring local media channels. “Maintain a low profile,” the advisory stated.

This advisory coincides with the three-year remembrance of the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas terrorists on Israel. The attack resulted in over 1,200 fatalities and countless injuries, marking the onset of the Israel-Hamas conflict. The event also led to a surge in antisemitism globally, raising concerns about potential risks in Djerba, which hosts a significant Jewish community.

Djerba, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023, has been home to Jewish communities for nearly 2,000 years, according to the World Jewish Congress. The island attracts thousands of Jewish visitors annually, celebrating the Lag B’Omer festival between Passover and Shavuot.

Tunisia, including Djerba, is currently classified under “Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution,” as per the U.S. State Department’s website. Travelers are warned about commonplace petty crime, especially in tourist-rich areas. Violent crime is more frequent at night, prompting advisories against walking or driving after dark.

Some regions of Tunisia, particularly near its borders with Libya and Algeria, are advised as “Level 4: Do Not Travel” due to terrorism threats. The State Department’s site states, “Terrorist groups continue plotting possible attacks in Tunisia,” with warnings that attacks could occur without advance notice.

Fox News Digital sought further comments from the State Department concerning these warnings.
