Debate Erupts Over Flight Attendants’ Role in Handling Passenger Luggage

Influencer Dominique Elissa sparked a discussion about flight attendants’ responsibilities after sharing an experience on the “Big Small Talk” podcast on October 7. While traveling, Elissa asked a male flight attendant for help placing her luggage in an overhead bin, explaining she was pregnant and advised against lifting heavy items.

The flight attendant did not assist, suggesting the bag needed to be checked if she couldn’t lift it herself. Another passenger noticed and helped her with the luggage. The airline involved was not specified.

“I was just so shocked,” Elissa remarked about the incident.

Diane Gottsman, an etiquette expert and founder of the Protocol School of Texas, explained that travelers should not automatically expect flight attendants to manage their luggage. She emphasized that flight attendants are primarily customer service providers, not baggage handlers.

Gottsman highlighted that policies differ across airlines, with some discouraging or prohibiting lifting heavy bags due to injury risks. She also noted that the flight attendant in Elissa’s case offered an alternative by suggesting her bag be checked.

The online response was swift, with many pointing out that flight attendants are generally restricted from lifting bags. Some Reddit users shared experiences of flight attendants voluntarily assisting.

“I was under the impression flight attendants aren’t allowed to lift bags into the overhead bins,” commented one user.

Other users felt passengers should be prepared to handle their own luggage. “Not their job! If you cannot lift your bags, then you should politely ask another passenger,” added another commenter.

Gottsman recommended that travelers who cannot manage their bags consider checking them. Assistance from fellow passengers should be seen as an act of kindness.
