An online initiative supported by Illinois Governor JB Pritzker’s administration is documenting experiences of people affected by immigration enforcement under the Trump administration. The project, named Disappeared in America, aims to record instances of detentions, deportations, and family separations, providing what organizers call a public record of Trump’s mass deportation actions.
Illinois Accountability Commission’s Role
The initiative is supported by the Illinois Accountability Commission and includes about 500 narratives from immigrants and American citizens impacted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations, notably during Operation Midway Blitz in Chicago. Launching this project amidst a heated political debate over immigration enforcement, the White House emphasizes arrests of criminal offenders, while critics highlight civil liberties violations affecting non-criminal immigrants.
Beatriz Lopez, co-founder and executive director of the Democracy Power Project, expressed the ultimate goal of preventing such events from happening again. She praised the governor’s efforts to create a model for accountability and lift the voices of affected individuals, though acknowledging the state’s limited scope of action.
Governor Pritzker’s Stance
Governor Pritzker stated that the Trump administration launched a military-style campaign against communities in Illinois, peaking last year with an influx of masked federal agents. Pritzker emphasized accountability, criticizing the administration for allowing agents unchecked actions. He expressed hope for future empowerment of individuals upholding justice and law.
Disappeared in America Overview
The project presents an interactive database featuring nearly 500 documented cases, including tragic incidents involving victims like Lorenza Salgado Araujo and Johan Sebastian Duran Guerrero, who were shot by ICE agents. The database includes profiles with photos, videos, and audio recordings.
An example story shared depicts a young girl, Ophelia, whose father was arrested. Ophelia, facing cancer, witnessed her father’s arrest, highlighting the broader issue faced by many children of detained parents.
The advocates behind the site, linked with the Democracy Power Project, argue the importance of transforming statistics into personal stories. They intend to keep these narratives alive, forming a public record that can expand over time.
Pritzker’s Efforts and Operation Midway Blitz
The Illinois Accountability Commission, initiated during Operation Midway Blitz, is a state-run effort amid widespread ICE enforcement activities in Chicago. Governor Pritzker, along with local leaders, condemned the operation which led to protests and allegations of federal law enforcement abuses.
Hina Mahmood, the executive director of the group, highlighted the courage of individuals who shared their stories as fundamental in building a collective historical record.
Debate Over ICE Operations
The launch draws attention to conflicting perspectives on ICE activities in the U.S. Advocates argue that many detained by ICE have no criminal records, challenging the Trump administration’s stated priorities of targeting criminal offenders. Critics also claim aggressive enforcement disproportionately affects mixed-status families and minority communities.
The Department of Homeland Security and Trump supporters justify ICE actions as focusing on capturing serious offenders, reinforcing the federal government’s stance on arrest efforts.
Future Aims of Disappeared in America
Lopez stated the project’s primary aim is to enhance accountability, with plans for other states to participate. The goal is for the database to serve future government bodies as a call to action for holding ICE accountable, potentially leading to significant policy reforms to prevent repeat occurrences.
