Introduction
New York Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Vice President JD Vance will make important appearances in Michigan on Thursday. They are campaigning for Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and Republican rival Mike Rogers. Their presence adds significant political star power to one of the most closely watched races.
Competing Campaign Events
Vance is set to lead a Trump 47 Committee rally in Monroe, Michigan. At the same time, Ocasio-Cortez will accompany El-Sayed at events in Iron Mountain and Marquette. Announcing her participation, Ocasio-Cortez praised El-Sayed’s coalition-building efforts aimed at reducing costs for Michigan families. El-Sayed praised Ocasio-Cortez as an important ally during the primary and expressed enthusiasm for campaigning together.
Vance’s visit is part of Republican efforts to strengthen support in this crucial Senate race. A Republican National Committee spokesperson emphasized the leadership of President Trump and Vice President Vance in promoting a strong Republican lineup in Michigan.
Michigan’s Electoral Significance
Michigan remains a pivotal presidential battleground. It is expected to be a highly competitive Senate fight, which could decide the party control of the chamber after the midterms. The dual events featuring Ocasio-Cortez and Vance provide voters with an exceptional opportunity to evaluate two influential young political figures.
Democratic strategist Joel Payne described the Michigan Senate race as influential beyond November. According to him, it will shape the 2028 primary field tone. A Michigan poll from July shows Ocasio-Cortez polling third among potential 2028 Democratic presidential candidates, trailing only Pete Buttigieg and Jon Ossoff.
Poll Results
Six recent polls show El-Sayed leading, with margins ranging from 1 to 7 percentage points. The latest, an InsiderAdvantage survey of 1,200 likely voters on October 9-10, reports El-Sayed at 48 percent compared to Rogers’ 46 percent. Wedgewood Polls recorded El-Sayed at 53 percent against Rogers’ 47 percent among 607 voters.
Other polls indicate a close race within the margin of error. Quantus Insights had El-Sayed leading 48 percent to Rogers’ 47 percent based on a survey of 744 voters. YouGov’s larger sample placed El-Sayed with a narrow 1-point lead at 49 percent to 48 percent.
