The Finnish women’s hockey team is currently experiencing a norovirus outbreak that has led to the postponement of the game originally set for Thursday between Finland and Canada. According to a spokesperson from the Finnish Ice Hockey Association, 13 players have either contracted the virus or are in quarantine due to exposure.
Olympic officials announced, “While all stakeholders recognize the disappointment of not playing the game as originally scheduled, this was a responsible and necessary decision that reflects the spirit of the Olympic Games and the integrity of the competition.”
Norovirus and Its Impact
Norovirus, commonly known as the “stomach bug,” is a highly contagious virus that typically results in symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea. The virus is particularly concerning in environments such as sports teams, where close contact can lead to rapid spread. For athletes, the additional risk of dehydration is significant.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that most individuals recover from norovirus within a few days, though they may remain contagious for some time after symptoms have subsided.
Outbreak Timeline and Team Finland’s Response
The Finnish team first detected issues on Tuesday night. By Thursday’s practice session, it became evident, as only 10 players remained healthy enough to participate. Coach Tero Lehterä expressed hope noting, “Most of the sick players are getting better but not healthy enough to play. And there’s the chance that if we would play it could influence Team Canada and their health as well.”
Team Finland is striving to maintain morale amidst these challenges. “It’s not nice, definitely. But we try to focus one day at a time,” stated captain Jenni Hiirikoski. “The big thing has been how we tolerate different things. I think we try to help each other, whatever it is, and how it goes. So, it’s just stay calm and focused.”
Historical Context and Rescheduling
Historically, Finland’s women’s hockey team has been a strong contender in international competitions, securing bronze medals in the last two Winter Olympic Games. The postponed Finland-Canada match has been rescheduled for February 12, and will take place at the Milano Rho Ice Hockey Arena.
