At least 40 ultra-Orthodox Jewish men were arrested on Tuesday morning at Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport on suspicion of attempting to evade mandatory military service, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). These individuals, the IDF stated, are subject to compulsory service and will face legal proceedings.
The scale of the arrests was noteworthy, reflecting ongoing tensions over military service obligations among ultra-Orthodox communities. Traditionally, the ultra-Orthodox, also known as Haredi Jews, have been exempt from military service. However, a 2024 Supreme Court ruling mandated the drafting of ultra-Orthodox individuals in the absence of a legal exemption.
Recent conflicts, including the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, have intensified discussions on service equality, influencing political debate ahead of national elections in Israel scheduled for October 27.
Many Israelis have voiced frustration over the unequal distribution of security responsibilities, particularly among military reserves. Haredi Jews account for approximately 13% of Israel’s population, rapidly increasing to an anticipated 25% by 2050, based on data from Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics.
In Netanya, leaders of the Breslev Hasidic community recently rallied against conscription and the imprisonment of service evaders, highlighting the community’s preference for full-time religious study over military enlistment. Political representatives of the ultra-Orthodox have called for legislation to maintain their exemption while establishing a draft quota for ultra-Orthodox men and women.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, dependent on ultra-Orthodox political support since the 2022 elections, faces challenges balancing these demands with broader calls for conscription equality. In a recent interview on Kol Barama, an ultra-Orthodox radio station, Netanyahu criticized the arrests, suggesting they undermine efforts to integrate the ultra-Orthodox into military service without coercion.
