In a heartwarming rescue, a police K-9 named Bo played a crucial role in locating a missing 13-year-old boy during a snowstorm in Gastonia, North Carolina, late Saturday. According to authorities, emergency crews were able to find the child safely despite the hazardous winter conditions.
The Gastonia Police Department shared on Facebook that the situation began when a young boy with special needs left his home on foot without adequate clothing just as snow and freezing temperatures were worsening. K-9 Bo and his handler, Sgt. Rowland, were called into action to assist in the search efforts.
Officers from several agencies quickly established a search perimeter. Meanwhile, K-9 Bo tracked the boy’s scent through the snow-covered ground and darkness. This coordinated effort resulted in the child entering the secured area, where he was ultimately spotted by Gaston Emergency Medical Services. Although he was cold, the boy was thankfully unharmed.
“This successful outcome was made possible by quick action, strong teamwork, and the dedication of everyone involved — especially a snowy snouted K-9 Bo who performed well in the midst of severe weather,” stated the police department.
FOX Weather reported that a historic nor’easter rapidly intensified off the North Carolina coast that weekend, bringing record snowfall across parts of the Southeast and near hurricane-force wind gusts. In photos shared by the department, Sgt. Rowland posed with K-9 Bo, both appearing relieved and grateful for the outcome.
The storm, which blanketed portions of Tennessee, the Carolinas, and Virginia with more than a foot of snow, featured winds howling at up to 70 mph in places such as Nags Head, North Carolina. The Outer Banks region also experienced widespread gusts exceeding 65 mph.
Analyzing the storm’s progression, the FOX Forecast Center noted that the pressure dropped dramatically by 33 millibars in just 24 hours from Saturday night to Sunday. This drastic change was the result of arctic air linked to a displaced polar vortex clashing with warm, moisture-rich air from the Gulf, leading to the storm’s rapid intensification.
