Trump Discusses Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Repairs and Vandalism Allegations

50 minutes ago 0

President Donald Trump stated that the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is now 70 percent filled after recent repairs. He also issued a warning about potential jail time for any vandalism to the landmark. In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump mentioned the pool’s progress, saying it is “70% filled with water and looking good.” He added that any vandalism would result in jail time, emphasizing enhanced surveillance with newly installed security cameras.

This statement revisits an ongoing controversy regarding damage to the pool’s lining. Federal prosecutors had previously dismissed charges against former Olympian David Hearn, concluding that installation errors caused the damage, not vandalism. The Interior Department’s documents pointed to rushed project completion before the America 250 celebration as the source of the problem.

Doug Buchanan from DC Courts mentioned that multiple vandalism cases were filed but later dismissed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. Norm Eisen, Hearn’s attorney, criticized Trump for blaming unnamed vandals for prior rushed renovations, calling such actions a misuse of public resources.

The White House referred to Trump’s Truth Social post when contacted for comments. Newsweek sought further response from the Department of Justice regarding the situation.

Despite the prosecutors’ findings, Trump reiterated in a Truth Social post that the pool has been flawed since its 1922 construction, alleging constant leaks and expressing hope for future improvements without vandalism. He accused vandals of significant damage, including slashing the pool’s surface and poisoning nearby grass.

While repairs continue at the Reflecting Pool, with water flowing again as of October 12, the project has experienced delays and significant cost increases. Initial estimates suggested a $1.5 to $2 million cost, which ballooned during the process, and the newly applied pool coating began peeling shortly after completion.

Federal prosecutors rejected Trump’s vandalism claims regarding the Reflecting Pool’s damage, attributing it to poor contractor performance and hastened project completion before the America 250 event. The Department of Justice dismissed charges against Hearn after further investigation revealed the widespread damage was not consistent with vandalism.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro supported this conclusion, presenting evidence undermining the vandalism theory. D.C. Superior Court Judge Todd Edelman dismissed Hearn’s case, blocking any future prosecutorial actions against him.

Hearn maintained his innocence, explaining his presence at the pool as coincidental while cycling. He was merely observing previously damaged lining.

Trump maintained his accusations in his latest post, pointing to footage and media reports as evidence. He criticized the findings of the D.C. U.S. Attorney’s Office.
