Trump Labels Golf Course ‘Trash Island’ Amid Legal Conflict

53 minutes ago 0

President Donald Trump has shared images showing damage and debris at a historic golf course in Washington, D.C. He referred to it as ‘trash island’ amid an ongoing legal struggle about the course’s future. On Sunday, Trump revealed plans for redeveloping the East Potomac Golf Links. However, discussions about its future are still ongoing. The proposed changes have faced legal scrutiny, with concerns that federal review processes were bypassed during planning.

On Monday, Judge Ana C. Reyes led a session asking senior Department of the Interior (DOI) officials to speak after hundreds of trees were unexpectedly removed last week. Reyes expressed skepticism over claims that the tree removal and new golf course plans were unrelated. “There is no universe in which all of this coincidentally happened all at the same time,” she stated.

Trump’s Reaction to Ongoing Dispute

Following the court session on Monday, which did not bring a conclusive decision, Trump used Truth Social to voice his opinions about the ongoing conflict. Accompanying a series of images, he posted, “Here are pictures of Trash Island for the judge to study. This is just a small area, and better than some!” Later, he added, “Trash Island, Washington, D.C., the nickname for the broken and dilapidated golf course, is the subject of frivolous litigation…” He criticized the management of the course over the years and asserted that the renovation would transform it into a place of beauty and success.

The East Potomac Park is a federal property overseen by the National Park Service, which is part of the Interior Department. The National Links Trust currently operates the golf course, but according to a May agreement, the NPS is expected to assume responsibility once the restoration is ready to start.

Judge’s Concerns Over Park Plans

During Monday’s hearing, Judge Reyes rebuked Trump administration lawyers for pushing the project forward despite her earlier suspension of renovations. Appointed by former President Joe Biden to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, Reyes showed her displeasure with the attorneys for missing a filing. “We can do this all day… I have nothing planned for this evening,” she remarked. Although attorneys claimed the renovation plans were still preliminary, Trump’s unveiling of plans suggested otherwise, leading Reyes to question the truthfulness of the information presented.

Reyes asked, “Do I believe the president of the United States or do I believe you?” She noted the disparity between Trump’s declaration of a final redesign plan and the attorneys’ differing statements. The White House maintains that they are completing the park’s 2019 preservation plan, whereas opponents argue Trump’s redevelopment ideas surpass these established plans.

Earlier in the year, Reyes instructed the government to notify about any significant renovations on the course. Nevertheless, over Columbus Day weekend, more than 500 trees were cut down. Reyes expressed confusion at the government’s actions, stating she was “at a total loss.” Recently, the White House requested Reyes remove herself from the case, accusing her of partiality—a step Reyes refused, after being labeled a “crazed lunatic” by Trump.

Reyes highlighted the park’s historical significance and its importance for district residents. A preservation group, Save East Po, commented, “It’s just sad to think that a cherished public park could be taken and converted into a luxury golf course.” The redevelopment of East Potomac Golf Links is part of various projects proposed or initiated by the Trump administration in Washington, D.C., including changes to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and a new White House ballroom project. These ventures have frequently faced resistance from conservation groups.
