Trump Criticizes Norway Over Nobel Peace Prize Controversy

6 days ago 0

President Donald Trump expressed frustration during a campaign rally in Michigan on Sunday, targeting Norway for not awarding him the Nobel Peace Prize. Trump’s comments followed his ongoing claims that his diplomatic achievements deserved recognition.

Addressing the crowd, Trump asserted he had resolved numerous conflicts and anticipated winning the Nobel Prize. He mentioned discussing the possibility with First Lady Melania Trump before the announcement of the 2026 laureate. “I said, ‘first lady, I get the Nobel Prize in two weeks, and it’ll be an honor,'” Trump revealed. Yet, the award went to South African jurist Navanethem “Navi” Pillay. Trump criticized the decision, describing Norway disparagingly and expressing a desire to disengage from the country.

Newsweek reached out to various sources, including the White House and the Norwegian Embassy, for comments on Trump’s remarks.

Trump’s Pursuit of the Nobel Peace Prize

Donald Trump has reiterated his desire for the Nobel Peace Prize over the years, contrasting his efforts with those of former President Barack Obama, who received the award in 2009. At the United Nations General Assembly in 2025, Trump highlighted his achievements in ending several wars, asserting he deserved the Nobel for his accomplishments.

Nevertheless, Trump predicted the Nobel Committee’s reluctance to acknowledge him, previously stating, “They will never give it to me. It’s too bad. I deserve it, but they will never give it to me.” His administration cited various diplomatic efforts, including those involving Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Abraham Accords, as overlooked contributions.

The selection of Nobel laureates by the independent Norwegian Nobel Committee, not by the Norwegian government, has been a source of contention for Trump, impacting his approach to foreign policy with Norway.

Nobel Prize Controversy and Impact on Foreign Policy

Trump’s frustration with the Nobel Prize extended to his interactions with European nations in 2025. In communication with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Trump expressed resentment over not receiving the award. “Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace,” Trump wrote.

Støre emphasized the Nobel Committee’s independence to Trump, reiterating the Norwegian government’s lack of involvement in the selection process.

Response to 2026 Nobel Peace Prize Decision

Following the announcement of Navi Pillay as the 2026 Nobel laureate, Trump criticized the decision as a “stain” on Norway’s reputation. He questioned Pillay’s recognition and reiterated his own diplomatic achievements as more deserving of the award.

Pillay, an established figure in international law and human rights, served in various U.N. roles. Her selection was met with mixed reactions, including criticism from pro-Israel groups due to her previous inquiries into Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Ongoing Recognition Efforts

Trump’s campaign for a Nobel extends back to his initial presidency, with public nominations and support from figures such as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Despite these endorsements, the Nobel Committee maintains confidentiality regarding nominees for 50 years, rendering public nominations unofficial.

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado’s act of gifting her Nobel medal to Trump further fueled discussions around the award. Nobel officials clarified that while the physical medal can be transferred, laureate status remains permanent with the original recipient.

Alternatives to the Nobel Prize

Despite not securing the Nobel, Trump received other awards recognizing his diplomatic efforts. In 2025, he became the first recipient of FIFA’s Peace Prize, an honor that has since faced scrutiny and review. Recently, Trump received a “Man of the Century” award presented by congressional candidate Joe Mitchell, who criticized the Nobel Committee’s decision to overlook Trump.
