On Saturday night, in Commerce City, Colorado, the Chicago Fire emerged victorious against the Colorado Rapids with a 4-2 scoreline. Jonathan Bamba was pivotal, scoring two goals, while Robert Lewandowski and Puso Dithejane each contributed one goal to the win.

The Fire, with a record of 16-10-7 and currently holding 55 points, occupy fourth place in the Eastern Conference. They have one regular-season match remaining, trailing third-place Inter Miami by a single point. Miami has two games left, while the Fire are ahead of fifth-place Charlotte by two points, with Charlotte having one match to play. Securing the fourth seed would grant the Fire home-field advantage in a best-of-three first-round playoff series. Their upcoming fixture is against the Columbus Crew at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview on the final day of the regular season.

During the match, Lewandowski’s crucial goal came on a counterattack in the 74th minute. He sprinted onto a pass from Philip Zinckernagel at the top of the penalty area, skillfully evading goalkeeper Nico Hansen, who left his line to challenge him, and scored from close range, giving the Fire a 3-2 lead.

Bamba’s first goal came in the 41st minute, bringing the score to 1-1 at halftime. His second, which marked his first multigoal game in Major League Soccer (MLS), gave the Fire a 2-1 lead in the 56th minute. Dithejane sealed the win with a goal from a Lewandowski assist in the 88th minute.

Morgan Whittaker opened the scoring in the 22nd minute for the Rapids, who briefly took the lead. Paxten Aaronson added to their tally with a goal in the 58th minute. Whittaker’s goal marked his third consecutive scoring game. The Rapids, now at a record of 12-14-7 with 43 points, sit eighth in the Western Conference. The defeat ended their five-game unbeaten streak. They are just one point ahead of Real Salt Lake, which is in 10th place.
