Philadelphia 76ers Fall to Detroit Pistons in First Season Loss

1 day ago 0

The Philadelphia 76ers started their season strong, winning their first three games, even without all their key players. However, they faced their first defeat against the Detroit Pistons on Sunday night, losing 106-93.

Joel Embiid, a key player for the 76ers, was absent for rest and recovery. This absence left the team with limited backup center options, leading to LeBron James starting as the center. James faced a tough matchup against big men John Collins and Paul Reed.

James said, “I mean we got an MVP over here. I’m not here to have a sustainable role at the five. We got Joel Embiid on the team, you know? And so I don’t see it being a sustainable role, but it’s a role that we know we can tap into if we need it.”

Collins scored 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, while Reed added eight points and eight rebounds. James contributed 18 points, two rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Despite his performance, James acknowledged the challenging situation, stating his preference not to play a sustained role as a center.

James turning 42 in December emphasizes the need to preserve him from physically demanding positions. Concerns arise about possible issues if Embiid faces a long-term absence.

Adem Bona, the 76ers’ forward/center, provided support from the bench, with six points, 13 rebounds, and an assist. However, Detroit dominated rebounding, collecting 54 to Philadelphia’s 37. Beyond Bona, no 76ers player grabbed more than five rebounds.

Detroit led by up to 21 points in the game. They came in strong, having previously overcome a 29-point deficit to beat the Cleveland Cavaliers. The 76ers used only eight players, whereas the Pistons utilized 11.

Before the game, Embiid expressed his willingness to play, although the decision to rest him was ultimately made by the coaching staff and management. Both Embiid and James are likely to be managed carefully throughout the regular season, prioritizing a healthy lineup for the playoffs.

Now at 3-1, the 76ers aim to recover in their upcoming match against the Indiana Pacers set for Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. ET.
