Illinois Men’s Basketball Team Prepares for New Season

1 hour ago 0

David Mirković recalls deboarding the plane at Willard Airport after the Illinois men’s basketball team celebrated their Elite Eight win over Iowa. It marked their first Final Four in 21 years. The team, led by freshman stars Keaton Wagler and Mirković, was greeted by thousands of fans. “Seeing so many fans was impressive,” Mirković shared during Big Ten media days. “It felt like a movie.”

In preparation for the upcoming season, the team has faced changes. Wagler has moved on to the NBA following a standout freshman year. Key players like Kylan Boswell and Ben Humrichous have also left. However, Mirković, Andrej Stojaković, Tomislav and Zvonimir Ivišić, and Jake Davis remain. They aim to lead the team, now ranked No. 3 in the AP poll, as they enter their season opener against Fairleigh Dickinson.

Injuries have been a concern. Mirković, who recently underwent foot surgery, was seen using a boot and scooter before an exhibition match against Baylor. During that game, Stojaković, Zvonimir Ivišić, and Tomislav Ivišić all faced health issues. Last season ended with a loss to Connecticut in a national semifinal, motivating the team to aim higher. “Waiting a whole year to try to get back to that point is tough,” Stojaković admitted. “It’s about patience and maturity.”

The returning core is bolstered by preseason All-Big Ten picks Mirković and Stojaković, along with veterans Tomislav Ivišić and Davis. They need support from newcomers like Quentin Coleman and Stefan Vaaks to compensate for Wagler’s departure. Coleman, the country’s No. 3 shooting guard, switched his commitment to Illinois from Wake Forest promptly before the Final Four. Underwood has praised Coleman’s competitive nature, noting his impressive shooting skills.

Vaaks, originally from Estonia, joins after a strong freshman year at Providence where he averaged 15.8 points and 3.2 assists. His versatility and eagerness to improve, especially in defense, have been key highlights. The team anticipates a faster-paced offense, unlike last season’s adjusted style to fit Wagler. But challenges remain, such as finishing close games and forming a cohesive defense alongside their offense.

Adapting quickly is crucial for the newcomers, especially with the demanding early schedule. Stojaković expressed the importance of carrying over experiences while acknowledging the need to start fresh. “Every team starts anew,” he said. “Supporting each other through highs and lows is vital for success.”

Mirković continues to recover post-surgery. Underwood assured it was about ensuring proper healing rather than a setback. Despite challenges, Mirković’s versatility remains a crucial asset. Stojaković’s aggressive play and improved shot selection are expected to further support the team this season.

Underwood acknowledged Tomislav Ivišić’s growing proficiency and dedication. “His face-up and driving skills have improved,” Underwood mentioned, hoping for his continued health. Illinois’ No. 3 ranking is its second-highest ever, with the 1984-85 team holding the top spot. The team embraces these expectations, aiming for their first national title.

“This group has yet to prove themselves,” Underwood stated. “Last year’s successes are past. We need to create our own identity and excel beyond previous achievements.” The determination remains high as they strive for improvement. “Our veterans carry the desire to rectify the past,” he added. “Let’s aim for better outcomes.”
